Bernie Sanders Calls for Resignation of RFK Jr. as Health Secretary

Washington, August 30, 2025 — Senator Bernie Sanders has demanded that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. resign from his position as the United States health secretary, citing growing concerns that his leadership endangers public health.

    Sanders Criticizes Kennedy’s Leadership

In a piece for The New York Times, Sanders accused Kennedy of putting Americans at risk and called for his immediate resignation. He argued that the administration’s slogan, “Make America Healthy Again,” has been undermined by Kennedy’s policies, which have weakened scientific guidance and public health practices.

The senator noted the recent firing of CDC director Susan Monarez and the resignations of four senior CDC officials who opposed Kennedy’s policies. He denounced Kennedy’s persistent anti-vaccine messaging and promotion of widely discredited theories.

    Vaccine and Public Health Concerns

Sanders highlighted Kennedy’s repeated assertions that vaccines are unsafe and ineffective, pointing out that several experts he references have had their licenses revoked or studies retracted. He warned that Kennedy has profited from promoting vaccine skepticism and is now using his HHS position to erode trust in science and public health guidance.

He cautioned that Kennedy’s approach could compromise childhood immunization programs, putting children at risk for diseases such as measles, polio, and chickenpox.

    Effects on Healthcare Access

Sanders emphasized that under Kennedy, accessing COVID-19 vaccines for younger adults and children has become more difficult due to increased costs and bureaucratic obstacles. He warned that continued anti-vaccine rhetoric could further restrict access to essential healthcare services.

    Bipartisan and Professional Opposition

Kennedy has faced criticism from both parties following CDC budget cuts and leadership changes. Over 750 current and former health officials signed a letter describing him as an “existential threat to public health,” accusing him of spreading misinformation and weakening the nation’s health infrastructure.

    Recent Incident Highlights Dangers

The dangers of misinformation were underscored by a recent shooting at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, where a gunman influenced by false vaccine claims killed a police officer before committing suicide. The event has intensified concern about the real-world impact of false health information.

Despite growing scrutiny from lawmakers, health professionals, and agency staff, Kennedy continues to defend his controversial positions, attracting widespread criticism and concern.
