A Lisbon streetcar derailed on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18 more. Portuguese television showed the yellow-and-white tram lying on its side along the narrow hill road it usually climbs and descends. Emergency workers rushed to the scene, surrounding the crumpled vehicle. The crash happened around 6 pm, at the beginning of the evening rush hour.

    Authorities React to the Tragedy

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the families and victims affected by the derailment. Rescue crews worked urgently to treat the injured and secure the site. Local media reported that investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash.

Lisbon’s Glória Tram and Its Role

The Glória funicular can carry over 40 passengers, both seated and standing. Many Lisbon residents regularly use the tram to travel the steep hill. The accident left the vehicle’s sides and roof partially collapsed, highlighting the severity of the impact.
