Trump openly pursued global recognition and actively sought the Nobel Peace Prize. Observers strongly expected him to secure the new FIFA peace honour.
Ceremony Adds Political Weight
FIFA granted US President Donald Trump the newly created peace prize during the 2026 World Cup draw on Friday. The event gained a stronger Trump influence as officials revealed the tournament matchups.
Trump continued pressing for international accolades and repeatedly promoted his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize. Supporters predicted his victory in this new FIFA category.
He maintained a close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who often asserted that Trump deserved the Nobel for brokering a Gaza ceasefire.
Infantino declared, “This is your prize, this is your peace prize,” and he emphasized football’s ability to unite people worldwide. The award marked a significant shift from FIFA’s normal sport-centred mission.
Trump addressed reporters at the Kennedy Centre in Washington and insisted he remained unsure about receiving the prize. He added, “I don’t need prizes. I just want to save lives.”
Reactions and Wider Context
FIFA explained that the honour recognised “individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world.”
The announcement arrived as the Trump administration faced scrutiny for lethal strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean. Officials also intensified their rhetoric against immigrants during the same week.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize ultimately went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. She stated soon after receiving it that she dedicated part of the honour to Trump for “his decisive support of our cause.”
