Israeli Forces Target Iranian Defence Systems
The Israeli military has carried out a major strike against defence systems in western Iran, escalating the Middle East conflict that erupted Saturday morning with joint US-Israeli air operations. The attack marks one of the most significant confrontations in the region in recent weeks, amid ongoing efforts by Washington and Tehran to negotiate limits on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran Hits Back Across the Gulf
In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes on American military positions throughout the Gulf, sparing only Oman. US President Donald Trump framed the airstrikes as part of a broader historical grievance with Iran, dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In a social media video, he warned Iranians to take cover and later encouraged them to challenge their government, calling it a rare opportunity for change.
Global Reactions and Disrupted Travel
The strikes have sparked international concern. UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged restraint, and the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the situation. Meanwhile, several countries in the region closed their airspace, causing flight cancellations and forcing planes headed to cities like Tel Aviv and Dubai to return to their departure points or divert to alternate routes.
