Sky has put 900 UK jobs at risk as it reshapes its business to compete with US streaming rivals. The broadcaster, which employs around 23,000 staff, expects about 600 roles to be cut following a consultation, with 300 staff redeployed. The latest round affects technology, product, and corporate teams, and follows launches of Sky Glass and the budget-friendly Sky Glass Air.
Since early 2023, Sky has cut nearly 3,500 roles while moving away from traditional satellite pay-TV toward internet-based products like Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which now account for over 90% of new subscriptions. The cuts bring staff levels back to roughly the 23,000 employed when Comcast acquired the business in 2018.
Earlier reductions included 2,000 roles at customer service centres and 800 installation jobs as consumers adopt plug-and-play streaming devices. Sky has also partnered with Warner Bros Discovery, making HBO Max available via its platform and ending its exclusive rights to HBO programming.
