Researchers say they’ve developed the first reliable blood test to diagnose myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
The test, created by scientists at the University of East Anglia and Oxford Biodynamics, identifies unique DNA-folding patterns in blood.
It correctly detected ME/CFS in 92% of cases and ruled it out in 98%, according to results published in the Journal of Translational Medicine.
“This could transform how we diagnose and manage this complex disease,” said lead researcher Prof Dmitry Pshezhetskiy.
Currently, ME/CFS is diagnosed only by symptoms, often leaving patients undiagnosed for years.
Experts welcomed the advance but urged caution. “These results are promising, but they must be validated in larger studies,” said Dr Charles Shepherd of the ME Association.
Prof Chris Ponting of the University of Edinburgh warned the claims were “premature” and noted the test may cost around £1,000.
If confirmed, the breakthrough could mark a major step toward earlier diagnosis and improved treatment for ME/CFS patients.
