Judge Blocks Trump Administration’s Shutdown Layoffs

    Court Finds Layoffs Potentially Unlawful
A federal judge in San Francisco has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s plan to lay off more than 4,100 federal employees amid the ongoing government shutdown. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ruled that the proposed layoffs may have been politically motivated and did not follow required legal procedures. The affected agencies include Commerce, Education, Energy, EPA, HHS, HUD, Homeland Security, and Treasury.

    Unions Challenge Layoff Plans
Labor unions, including the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and AFSCME, filed a lawsuit arguing that the administration’s reduction-in-force plans violated the Antideficiency Act. The unions contend that the layoffs improperly obligate federal funds during a shutdown and appear to serve political objectives rather than operational needs.

    Administration Defends Actions
White House Budget Director Russell Vought defended the layoffs as a necessary measure to reduce bureaucracy and focus resources on priority programs. He estimated that the total number of federal workers affected could eventually surpass 10,000. The judge has ordered the administration to provide detailed information about the layoffs within two days, and the temporary restraining order remains in effect while legal proceedings continue.
