Barcelona strike late to claim derby triumph and extend league lead

Barcelona secured a dramatic late win over Espanyol, strengthening their position atop La Liga. Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski scored decisive goals in the final minutes. The victory moved Barcelona seven points clear. The team dominated possession for long stretches, but Espanyol’s compact defense delayed a breakthrough until the closing stages.

    Late substitutions spark decisive moments

Hansi Flick urged patience as his side searched for openings. Barcelona moved the ball efficiently, stretching Espanyol’s defensive lines. Fermin Lopez provided the breakthrough after coming off the bench. He slipped a perfectly timed pass to Dani Olmo. Olmo curled a superb shot into the top corner four minutes from time, giving Barcelona the lead.

Barcelona maintained relentless pressure after scoring. Lopez again drove forward on the right flank and delivered an accurate cross. Robert Lewandowski met the ball in the box and finished calmly in the 90th minute. The late double strike secured the derby win and ended Espanyol’s hopes.

Barcelona have now scored 12 goals in the final 15 minutes this season. No other La Liga team has reached that tally. Their late-game dominance reflects both physical strength and mental resilience.

Espanyol start strong but goalkeepers keep them at bay

Espanyol began the derby with energy and intensity. They pressed high and challenged Barcelona’s buildup. Tyrhys Dolan tested the defense after four minutes, but a timely block denied a clear chance. The hosts maintained pressure throughout the first half.

Joan Garcia played a crucial role in goal for Barcelona. The former Espanyol player made several important saves. He left the club last summer after nine years. His reactions repeatedly frustrated the home side and preserved a level scoreline.

Marko Dmitrovic later replaced Garcia and remained alert. He denied Eric Garcia from close range in the 72nd minute. The save preserved parity at a critical stage. A draw seemed likely before Barcelona’s late surge decided the match.

    Title race pressure continues

Real Madrid remain second and continue to chase Barcelona. They can reduce the gap on Sunday with a home win against Real Betis. A victory would cut the deficit to four points, keeping pressure on the leaders.

Espanyol extended their long wait for a league derby victory. Their last success against Barcelona came in 2009. They remain fifth after a disciplined showing. Barcelona leave the derby with momentum and a commanding lead at the top.
