Women who skip their first breast cancer screening are at a 40% higher risk of dying from the disease, according to new research from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute. The study, published in the British Medical Journal, tracked about 500,000 women who received their first mammogram invitation between 1991 and 2020. Researchers followed them for up to 25 years and found that nearly one in three (32%) did not attend their initial appointment. Those who missed their first screening were less likely to attend future mammograms, more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage, and ultimately had a higher breast cancer…

The world’s oceans have failed a key planetary health check for the first time, with acidity levels now beyond safe limits for marine life. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research reported that ocean surface pH has dropped by about 0.1 units since the industrial era, a 30-40% increase in acidity. This shift threatens coral reefs, shellfish, Arctic ecosystems and ultimately global food security. Seven of nine planetary boundaries have now been breached, including climate change, land use, freshwater, and biodiversity loss. Scientists stress that fossil fuel emissions are the main driver, as carbon dioxide absorbed by oceans turns into…

Amazon will shut all 19 of its Amazon Fresh stores in the UK, four years after opening the first in London. Five of the sites will be converted into Whole Foods Market outlets, the US organic grocery chain Amazon acquired in 2017. The Fresh stores, launched in 2021, allowed shoppers to walk out without tills using an app, cameras and sensors to track purchases. The format lost momentum after the pandemic, failing to challenge rivals such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Amazon has not confirmed how many staff will be affected but said it would try to redeploy employees elsewhere in…

Vodafone franchisees warned in 2020 that commission cuts were affecting their mental health, four years before a group of 62 launched a £120m high court claim. A survey of 119 franchisees revealed stress, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and low trust in the company. The claim alleges Vodafone “unjustly enriched” itself at the expense of small business owners, some of whom reported personal debts over £100,000 and suicidal thoughts. Vodafone says it “strongly refutes” the allegations and describes the case as a “commercial dispute,” while also launching a fourth investigation into its franchising division.

Europe is exploring the creation of a “drone wall” along its eastern flank to counter Russian aerial threats, a concept championed by Baltic states and backed by EU leaders including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The project, known as the Baltic Drone Wall, involves Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania working to bolster both EU and NATO defences. Central to the initiative is Eirshield, a multilayered anti-drone system developed by Estonian company DefSecIntel and Latvian firm Origin Robotics. Eirshield uses radars, cameras, radio frequency detection, and AI to automatically identify and neutralise hostile drones. Interception methods include signal jamming,…

Massive Attack have removed their catalogue from Spotify in protest at founder Daniel Ek’s €600m (£520m) investment in Helsing, a company developing AI-powered military drones. The band cited a “moral and ethical burden” on artists, arguing that revenue from their work ultimately funds lethal technologies. Ek’s venture capital firm Prima Materia led Helsing’s latest funding round in June. Helsing’s AI analyzes battlefield data to inform military decisions and produces its own drone, the HX-2. Massive Attack made their announcement alongside joining the No Music for Genocide initiative, in which over 400 artists and labels block their music from streaming services…

Donald Trump announced on Friday that Chinese president Xi Jinping had agreed to approve a deal over TikTok, though no specifics of the agreement or signing timeline were disclosed. The announcement followed a phone call between the two leaders, their first direct contact since June, amid heightened tensions over trade and technology. Trump said earlier this week that Washington and Beijing had reached a deal to place TikTok’s US operations under American control, with Oracle among the investors in talks to take a significant stake. Reports suggest the framework is still incomplete, and negotiations continue over compliance with laws passed…

A new Swedish trial suggests that taking a low daily dose of aspirin after colorectal cancer surgery can significantly reduce the risk of the cancer returning. The study, led by Prof. Anna Martling at the Karolinska Institute, involved over 3,500 patients across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. Researchers focused on patients whose tumours carried specific genetic mutations in the PI3K pathway, which make them more responsive to aspirin’s anti-cancer effects. Around 40% of colorectal cancer patients have such mutations. Patients with these mutations were randomly assigned to take 160mg of aspirin daily or a placebo for three years after surgery.…

A new daily pill for weight loss, orforglipron, has shown that one in five people can lose 20% or more of their body weight over 72 weeks, according to a trial by Eli Lilly. The drug targets GLP-1 receptors, like popular weight loss injections Mounjaro and Wegovy, but in a tablet form that is easier to store, distribute, and take. In a study of 3,127 adults with obesity, patients taking the highest dose lost an average of 11.2% of their weight, with 18.4% shedding at least 20%. Improvements were also seen in blood pressure, waist size, and cholesterol. The most…

Sky has put 900 UK jobs at risk as it reshapes its business to compete with US streaming rivals. The broadcaster, which employs around 23,000 staff, expects about 600 roles to be cut following a consultation, with 300 staff redeployed. The latest round affects technology, product, and corporate teams, and follows launches of Sky Glass and the budget-friendly Sky Glass Air. Since early 2023, Sky has cut nearly 3,500 roles while moving away from traditional satellite pay-TV toward internet-based products like Sky Glass and Sky Stream, which now account for over 90% of new subscriptions. The cuts bring staff levels…
