The EU’s planned ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 is set to be weakened, according to a senior MEP, in a move likely to provoke strong opposition from environmental groups. Manfred Weber, president of the European People’s party in the European parliament, said the European Commission is expected to soften the rule so it no longer amounts to a total ban on combustion engines. Instead of requiring all new cars to have zero CO₂ emissions from 2035, manufacturers would need to meet a 90% fleet-wide emissions reduction target, allowing some hybrid vehicles to remain…
Researchers have documented a surprising new hunting strategy off the coast of British Columbia: northern resident orcas cooperating with Pacific white-sided dolphins to hunt salmon. Using drones, underwater cameras, and acoustic tags, scientists observed dolphins racing ahead of the whales and appearing to lead them toward large Chinook salmon. The orcas then captured the fish, while the dolphins scavenged leftover pieces — and remarkably, the whales showed no aggression, even though they normally guard their kills. Acoustic recordings revealed alternating echolocation between the species during deep dives, suggesting they may be listening to each other and expanding their ability to…
U.S. stock markets rallied strongly after the Federal Reserve announced a cut in interest rates, boosting investor confidence and driving major indices higher. The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all saw significant gains, reflecting optimism about economic growth and market stability. The rate cut, aimed at supporting the economy, has encouraged investors to increase their exposure to equities. Analysts say the move signals the Fed’s commitment to maintaining favorable financial conditions and stimulating economic activity. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed steadily, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also surged, led by gains in technology and consumer-focused sectors. Market…
A new Cambridge University study has ranked humans 7th out of 35 mammals for monogamy, placing us above species like meerkats and gibbons but below Eurasian beavers and moustached tamarins. Researchers analysed genetic data to compare how often siblings share both parents. Humans showed 66% full siblings, suggesting a relatively strong tendency toward pair bonding. Beavers scored 72%, while highly promiscuous species such as chimpanzees and mountain gorillas ranked near the bottom. The study highlights that human mating behaviour varies widely across cultures and history, and social norms often reinforce monogamy. Scientists believe human pair bonding may have evolved alongside…
Health officials in England have identified a newly evolved mpox variant in a person who recently travelled to Asia. Genome sequencing revealed that the virus is a recombinant form, combining elements of two circulating mpox strains – the more severe clade 1 and the less virulent clade 2, which caused the global outbreak in 2022. The UK Health Security Agency said it is still assessing the significance of the new strain. While most mpox cases remain mild, experts warn that the discovery shows how the virus continues to evolve, stressing the importance of vaccination among eligible groups. Mpox, formerly known…
Marc Guéhi headed home a late winner to stun Fulham and send Crystal Palace into the Premier League’s top four, continuing Oliver Glasner’s strong record against Marco Silva’s side. Palace, who beat Fulham twice earlier in the year, once again found a way to edge a tight match despite missing key full-back Daniel Muñoz. Eddie Nketiah put Palace ahead with a sharp finish on his first league start of the season after excellent build-up from Adam Wharton, but Harry Wilson’s superb outside-of-the-boot strike levelled the score before half-time. Fulham had their chances, including Emile Smith Rowe being denied by Dean…
Far from the Himalayan trekking circuits and Kathmandu’s busy streets, Nepal’s southern Terai lowlands reveal a quieter, culturally rich side of the country. Here, in the homeland of the Tharu people, visitors can experience wildlife-filled national parks, sacred Buddhist sites such as Lumbini, and a growing network of community-run homestays designed to share local life with outsiders. In the village of Bhada near the Indian border, a homestay visit offers full immersion into Tharu traditions. Guests join families in clay-built kitchens, preparing dishes like spicy starfruit pickle and even grilled rice-field rat — a ritual food served during the harvest…
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the broad launch of autonomous AI agents, a new type of software designed to automate real-world business tasks. These AI-powered agents are intended to streamline workflows and increase operational efficiency across industries. The AI agents can handle complex tasks without constant human oversight. By performing repetitive or time-consuming activities, they allow employees to focus on higher-value work. Companies can deploy these bots across functions such as data analysis, customer service, and process management. AWS officials said the agents are designed to learn and adapt to specific business processes. Using artificial intelligence, the software can…
Max Verstappen will start from pole for the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, lining up ahead of championship leader Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in what will be a three-way fight for the world title. Verstappen delivered a superb 1:22.207 lap to secure pole, continuing his late-season momentum, but the championship situation still favours Norris. Norris leads Verstappen by 12 points and Piastri by 16. He will be world champion if he finishes ahead of both rivals or takes third place or better. Verstappen needs to win and hope Norris finishes outside the top three, while Piastri requires victory and…
A new study has found widespread contamination of European cereal products with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a toxic “forever chemical” formed when pesticides containing PFAS break down in soil. Conducted by Pesticide Action Network Europe (PAN), the research revealed that average TFA concentrations in breakfast cereals were around 100 times higher than those found in tap water. TFA was detected in 53 out of 65 cereal samples collected across 16 European countries, marking the first EU-wide analysis of its presence in food. Wheat-based items were among the most contaminated, with the highest levels found in an Irish breakfast cereal, followed by…
