Canadian authorities say TikTok fails to protect children

Canadian privacy officials found that TikTok does not adequately safeguard children’s personal data. They said the platform allows underage access and misuses sensitive information.

    Children continue using the app

Hundreds of thousands of Canadian children access TikTok each year. The company insists the app is not for users under 13. Investigators confirmed that many minors still use the platform.

    Data exploited for marketing

The investigation revealed that TikTok collected sensitive personal data from large numbers of children. The platform then used this information for targeted ads and content recommendations. Officials warned these practices could harm young users.

    TikTok promises stronger protections

The company announced plans to implement new safeguards for Canadian users. It disagreed with some findings but did not clarify which conclusions it contests.

    Commissioner highlights dangers

Privacy commissioner Philippe Dufresne led the inquiry with other officials. He said TikTok gathers vast amounts of user data, including from minors. He warned that targeted content and ads could negatively affect children.

Mr Dufresne confirmed TikTok agreed to enhance measures against underage access. The company also pledged to explain more clearly how it handles children’s personal data.

    Company responds to criticism

A spokesperson said the platform welcomed the investigation. They noted that Canadian officials accepted several proposals to improve protections. The spokesperson added that TikTok remains committed to privacy and transparency despite disputing parts of the report.

    Global scrutiny grows

The Canadian findings add to international concern over TikTok. Governments are questioning its effect on children and raising national security issues. The Chinese-owned company and Beijing deny all allegations.

In the United States, former President Donald Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Talks included a potential takeover of TikTok’s US operations by American companies.

In Europe, the European Commission ordered staff in 2023 to remove TikTok from corporate phones and devices. Officials said the measure aimed to protect data and strengthen cybersecurity.
