Jennifer Lawrence became the youngest recipient of the Donostia Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, receiving the honor at age 35. The Oscar-winning actress used the moment to speak out on politics and culture, warning that “our freedom of speech is under attack in America, including in the world of film.”
Lawrence presented her latest project Kill Me Love, which she also produced, and encouraged young filmmakers to persevere: “Learn, go to casting tests, keep trying. But above all, watching films is very important.” She praised creators like Greta Gerwig for showing how female voices enrich cinema when given opportunities.
Her recognition came during a festival marked by strong political protests, with repeated calls from artists and attendees to end the war in Gaza. From Juliette Binoche to Spanish directors and actors, many used the stage to condemn violence and show solidarity with Palestine.
For Lawrence, the night was both a career milestone and a reminder of cinema’s role as a platform for empathy, freedom, and social change.
