Louvre Moves Priceless Jewels After Daring Paris Heist

The Louvre transferred parts of its jewellery collection to the Bank of France vaults on Friday after last week’s high-profile theft. French radio network RTL reported that police escorted the operation discreetly to ensure maximum security.

Officials moved several pieces, including the “Crown Jewels” from the Apollo Gallery and other gems from different museum sections. The transfer followed growing public concern over the museum’s safety protocols.

The Bank of France’s vault, located 27 metres underground beneath its Paris headquarters, holds nearly 90% of the nation’s gold reserves.

Thieves Execute Bold Robbery in Broad Daylight

Last week, multiple thieves stormed the Louvre in a daylight robbery that shocked France. They used a basket lift to reach a balcony leading to the Apollo Gallery, forced open a window, and smashed display cases before escaping on motorbikes.

The heist lasted only six to seven minutes, but investigators estimate the stolen jewels’ value at 88 million euros. Prosecutors said the figure excludes their immense historical importance to France.

Police have launched an extensive investigation, reviewing security footage and questioning staff. Authorities believe the criminals executed a highly coordinated plan with inside knowledge of the museum’s layout.

Public Anger Mounts Over Security Failures

The theft sparked nationwide outrage and deep embarrassment for France. Lawmakers described the heist as a “national humiliation” and demanded answers about museum security funding.

Louvre officials had previously warned of insufficient investment in surveillance and staff resources. Critics now argue those warnings went unheeded.

The incident also reflects a broader European trend. In recent years, museum robberies have surged, with at least four thefts reported in France alone in recent months.

Cultural experts called the Louvre heist a wake-up call for heritage institutions across Europe to strengthen security before priceless history disappears again.
