The White House unveiled a media “Hall of Shame” as Trump intensifies his campaign against what he calls fake news. Officials presented the portal as a sortable, regularly updated archive designed to prevent controversial reports from disappearing. The site launched while Trump faced growing criticism for attacking journalists.
Government Targets Major Newsrooms
The portal names The Washington Post as “Offender of the week” and highlights claims tied to outlets such as The New York Times, CNN, CBS News and The Independent. Officials list accusations against each publication and group them into categories. The site also includes the Associated Press and Reuters, labeling one as biased and the other as deceptive. Additional classifications include circular reporting, failure to report, false claim, malpractice, mischaracterisation, misrepresentation and left-wing lunacy. Matt Murray of The Washington Post condemned the site and defended journalists’ constitutional rights. Conservative-leaning outlets received no citations.
Debate Over Press Freedom and Democracy
The Media Research Centre welcomed the initiative and argued that Republican leaders must identify media hostility. Experts speaking to DW warned that such rhetoric endangers journalists and threatens democratic norms. The website’s debut coincides with Trump’s escalating attacks on reporters, including insults often aimed at women, whom he has called ugly inside and out, stupid and piggy.
